BSP ‘lights up’ PMGH’s labor ward
Bank South Pacific has met an immediate need of the Port Moresby General Hospital by 'lighting up' its Labor ward today, Thursday 17th December, 2020, after its only examination light went out of service.
Gone are the days where doctors and nurses will use mobile phone torches to examine complicated cases of mothers in labor, thanks to BSP Finance- a subsidiary of the BSP Group.
BSP Finance came to the aid of the hospital through its Community Project initiative, donating eight (8) mobile examination Led lights along with backup batteries to the busiest labor ward in the country that sees over 50 deliveries per day.
BSP Finance General Manager Andy Roberts in handing over the donated items, valued at K30, 000 said, "we hope it will go a long way to deliver services in the community. We know they will be put to good use and 'shed some light' to what you are doing at the moment."
Port Moresby General Hospital's Coordinator for Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr Mary Bagita was grateful for the 'essential donation' from BSP. "You may think that they are just lights and wondering what use we have for them, but they are very important and will shed a lot of light on the work that we do," Dr Bagita said.
"We have not had lights for a while and depend on torchlights, sometimes running elsewhere to look for better lighting to come and use in the labor ward. We need the lights to examine women and the more complicated procedures. In the labor ward, we have 24 beds that are always occupied 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is actually a really important and valuable donation and we appreciate what you are giving to the maternity wing," Dr Bagita added.
Port Moresby General Hospital's Director of Medical Services Dr. Kone Sobi said, " it's a huge task to run the hospital, which requires a lot of money but this donation is timely; we rely on partners like BSP and others who had been very supportive this year- which has been very difficult by Covid-19. With Christmas just around the corner, the equipment you've donated will bring light to the staff in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department in carrying out their duties."
This is not the first time BSP Finance has come on board and help the hospital and maternity wing. The BSP team not too long ago assisted extend PMGH's family planning clinic. Last year it donated a playground for the children's ward and today came on board to donate medical examination lights.
Two weeks ago, BSP also donated an ultra sound scan machine valued at K150,000 to PMGH's Radiology Department.
This year BSP PNG will be delivering 46 community projects to the total value of K1.56 m. In addition to this, over 100 wash stations to respective communities, in response to Covid-19 valued at K110, 000.
